Trailblazing Women
Past Women of the Adirondacks
Adirondack women were instrumental in the creation of state and federal conservation legislation and protection long before they had the right to vote.
Julia Elizabeth Oliver, aka Jeanne Robert Foster, famous poet, was born in Johsburg, NY in 1879. As a young girl she would guide tourist parties up Crane Mountain for twenty-five cents a trip. Those years in the Adirondack wilderness had a profound influence on her life and her writing.
Grace Hudowalski became the first woman to climb all 46 high peaks on August 6, 1937. “Grace epitomized the image of a mountain woman: sharp witted, independent and expressive”(Lynn and Weber). She became the first president of the Adirondack 46ers and in 2014, in honor of her dedication to the Adirondacks, East Dix (#42) was officially renamed Grace Peak.
Adirondack Women Forever Wild applauds these trailblazing women and the next generation of history-in-the making mountain women.
